Au Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Ouganda...et comme dans beaucoup d'autres pays africains, ce sont les femmes qui sont les potières. Les hommes sont chargés de l'extraction et du transport de la terre argileuse. Tout le reste revient aux femmes.

Cette jarre illustre superbement un art Mangbetu voué à l'exaltation de la beauté. Dans le premier quart de XXe siècle, quelques artistes - dans le village de Niangara et à la cour du roi Okondo - initièrent la tradition d'une céramique anthropomorphe qui s'est imposée comme l'une des expressions les plus sensibles de l'art Mangbetu.
