La vallée de Glencoe, Écosse, 1895

Een indrukwekkend en monumentaal werk van de Bretonse post-impressionist Maxime Maufra, geschilderd in 1895 tijdens zijn reizen door Schotland. Dit grote doek (72 × 93 cm) verbeeldt de dramatische vallei van Glencoe, uitgevoerd in een krachtig en vrij penseel dat nauw aansluit bij de esthetiek van de Pont-Aven school, waarmee Maufra intens verbonden was.

Dit schilderij stamt uit de beste en meest gezochte periode van de kunstenaar, waarin zijn stijl volledig tot rijping kwam en hij tot zijn meest expressieve en karakteristieke werken kwam. De compositie wordt gedragen door een levendig spel van licht en kleur: diepe groentinten contrasteren met heldere, bijna luministische accenten in het dal, wat zorgt voor een sterke ruimtelijke werking en een opvallend moderne uitstraling.

De verfbehandeling is energiek en zelfverzekerd, met een rijke toets die zowel structuur als atmosfeer oproept—kenmerkend voor Maufra’s meest overtuigende landschappen. De invloed van zijn contacten met kunstenaars als Gauguin en Sérusier is subtiel voelbaar in de vrijheid van kleurgebruik en penseelvoering.

Het originele doek is vrij van retouches, wat uitzonderlijk is voor een schilderij van deze leeftijd en kwaliteit.

Voorzien van een indrukwekkende en goed gedocumenteerde provenance, hetgeen de waarde als investering aanzienlijk versterkt.

Een zeldzame kans om een groot en krachtig landschappelijk werk van museale kwaliteit te verwerven van een kunstenaar wiens markt zich overtuigend ontwikkelt en internationaal grote belangstelling geniet.
