Le coffret Instant Variations on Polaroid Land Films (1976) est un objet assez intéressant dans l’histoire de la photographie instantanée. Ce n’est pas un appareil ni un film, mais un portfolio artistique édité par Polaroid Corporation pour montrer les possibilités créatives de ses films instantanés. 
Le coffret « Instant Variations » (1976)
* Éditeur : Polaroid Corporation (Cambridge, Massachusetts).
* Année : 1976.
* Tirage : environ 1000 exemplaires (souvent numérotés, certains signés). 
* Contenu :
    * un portefeuille / coffret en toile ou carton rigide,
    * 14 photographies originales (tirages Polaroid ou reproductions photographiques) montées sur feuilles,
    * quelques pages de texte et une préface d’Allan Porter (éditeur du magazine Camera). 
* Format des feuilles : environ 44 × 33 cm pour les planches. 
Les tirages sont présentés séparément (non reliés) dans le coffret, comme un portfolio d’estampes.

L’idée était de montrer la diversité esthétique possible avec la photographie instantanée, à une époque où Polaroid encourageait activement les artistes à expérimenter avec ses films.
Contexte : Polaroid et les artistes
Dans les années 1970, Polaroid mène une politique culturelle très forte :
* soutien à des photographes et artistes (souvent via des résidences ou prêts de matériel),
* constitution d’une collection d’art Polaroid,
* publication de portfolios et livres démontrant les capacités créatives de la photo instantanée.
Ce coffret s’inscrit donc dans cette stratégie : promouvoir le film Polaroid comme médium artistique, pas seulement comme gadget grand public.
