- Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the most influential figures of the Viennese Secession and a pioneer of modern art. Renowned for his ornamental style, he merged symbolism, eroticism, and decorative opulence, producing works that redefined portraiture and allegorical painting in the early 20th century. His “Golden Phase,” characterized by the lavish use of gold leaf, brought him international fame, with masterpieces such as The Kiss becoming cultural icons. Klimt’s art often celebrated the female form, uniting sensuality with an aura of mystery.

On the art market, Klimt’s paintings rank among the most valuable ever sold. Works like Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II and Birch Forest have achieved prices exceeding $100 million, cementing Klimt as one of the most expensive artists in auction history. Collectors and institutions continue to pursue his works with fervor, recognizing their unique blend of symbolism and decorative splendor.

The Dancer (1916–18), one of Klimt’s final portraits, exemplifies his late style. The work portrays an elegant woman adorned in a richly patterned robe, surrounded by a vivid tapestry of flowers and ornamental motifs. Klimt uses bold, saturated colors pink, orange, green, and violet combined with expressive brushwork to create a dynamic, almost theatrical composition. The subject’s pose, sensual yet self-assured, embodies Klimt’s enduring fascination with the feminine presence as a symbol of vitality and allure.

Though unfinished at the time of his death in 1918, The Dancer remains a striking example of Klimt’s artistic vision during his later years. It encapsulates his transition from the gold-encrusted ornamentation of his earlier works to a freer, more expressive use of color and form, while still capturing the essence of beauty and sensuality that defines his oeuvre.
