An exceptional and rare bronze Buddha from the Lan Xang Kingdom (Laos), dating to the late period (17th–18th Century).

This fine example is cast in a dark brown bronze alloy, with traces of its original fire-gilding still visible, beautifully mellowed with age. The irregular, hand-finished base and robust structure—typical of sand or clay mold casting techniques—reflect the authentic craftsmanship of Lan Xang bronzes.

The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra (“Earth-Touching Gesture”), symbolizing the moment of Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. The right hand reaches gracefully toward the earth, palm inward, while the left hand rests on the lap, palm upward.

Despite the loss of the flame finial tip, the image remains in very good condition for its age, with a pleasing natural patina attesting to its centuries of history.

Notable Features:

Face
• Broad and softly rounded with almond-shaped eyes, heavy lids, and a serene, faintly smiling expression — hallmarks of Lan Xang and early Lanna style.

Hair & Finial
• Small, nodular curls and a worn but prominent topknot (ushnisha) with a flame-like finial.

Robe
• A narrow, straight chest band with the right shoulder left bare, falling into a simple flap is a signature feature of Lan Xang bronzes.

Base
• Slightly rough-cast, irregular, and robust, consistent with period hand-finishing techniques.

Surface & Patina
• Remnants of fire-gilding over bronze with a rich, time-earned patina.

This is a beautiful and authentic example of late Lan Xang Buddhist art, ideal for serious collectors and connoisseurs of Southeast Asian bronzes.

Historical Context:
The Late period of the Lan Xang Kingdom (modern-day Laos) is generally considered 1603–1707, ending with the kingdom’s split into three successor states: Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Champasak.
