"Een breed scala aan objecten, waaronder harpen, pijpkommen, figuren, krukken en opbergdozen, werd gesneden om de kracht, rijkdom en prestige van de Mangbetu-adel weer te geven. Houten figuren [zoals het huidige werk] hadden blijkbaar geen rituele betekenis (Cornet, Rene, Bwana muganga: hommes en blanc en Afrique Noire, 1971:296). Ze leggen echter wel nauwkeurig de Mangbetu-tradities van kleding, lichaamsdecoratie en de kenmerkende verlenging van de schedel vast door de zachte schedelbotten tijdens de kindertijd te binden."
