Masque en bois sculpté à la forme stylisée et expressive, représentant une hyène, figure ambivalente dans les rituels d’initiation de la société secrète Korè. Le visage anguleux présente une bouche béante garnie de dents triangulaires, un long nez rectiligne, des yeux ajourés et de hautes oreilles dressées, accentuant la verticalité de l’ensemble.
L’objet témoigne d’un usage rituel probable : l’intérieur brut du masque présente une usure profonde, des marques d’abrasion, des fissures anciennes et des zones sombres, typiques d’un port, probablement de la sueur et de la poussière lors de cérémonies dansées. La patine est riche, irrégulièrement polie par la manipulation, avec des brillances localisées sur les volumes saillants et des encrassements dans les creux.
Masque de fonction initiatique, destiné à incarner symboliquement les forces désordonnées que les jeunes initiés devaient apprendre à reconnaître et à maîtriser. Scarification et clou en laiton.
