This is a charming Kamakura-bori small tansu (two-drawer chest), a traditional Japanese carved lacquerware piece known for its bold relief carving and deep red-and-black lacquer finish. The front panels are decorated with an expressive floral motif, carved in low relief and highlighted by the contrasting dark lacquer outlines, a hallmark of Kamakura-bori craftsmanship.

Kamakura-bori (鎌倉彫) is a traditional Japanese wood carving and lacquer technique that originated in Kamakura during the Kamakura period (鎌倉時代, 1185–1333 / Western calendar). While early works were strongly influenced by Buddhist sculpture, later pieces—especially from the Shōwa period—were created for daily use and decorative purposes.
