Nicolas SULOT (1780-1858) inventor of the violin with ‘undulating’ surface in Dijon.

Nicolas SULOT was born on the 19th of July 1780 in Châtillon sur Seine (21) and died at the age of 77, on the 21st March of 1858 in Paris.

. He was Pierre SULOT’s son employee. Violinist and music teacher in Dijon he married Jeanne NAUDET (1791-1868) on the 9th July 1818 in Dijon and they recognise four sons: Jean Hubert (1813), Louis Robert (1815), Bernarde (1816), Francis (1817). They have 14 children, most musicians will be in Dijon and Paris.

He took an interest in violins in 1828 and obtained a 15-year patent on the 17th December 1929 for 'a soundboard with undulating surfaces that can be adapted to all kinds of stringed instruments'.

... “my new method makes it possible to increase the volume of air in the instrument and thus to increase the proportions.”

But the research is not confined to the 'undulating surfaces', he also studied all the solutions to improve sound: ‘straight sides, flat surface with straight sides, convex horizontal ripples curved sides, progressive chart curve convex and undulations... ‘ He was trying to find the best combination.

All Nicolas SULOT's instruments were actually made by Claude Raymond HENRY (1799-1850) of Dijon, Mirecourt luthier had convinced him to move to Dijon in 1829. It is also home to his thirteenth child Bernarde Mélanie SULOT born on Friday 13th November 1829, he died eleven days later.

Often these violins are attributed to Henry LAPOSTOLET or Claude Henry LAPOSTOLET, an error resulting from René Vannes's dictionary that confuses father and son. In fact Joseph Henry- Lapostolet (1828-1894) teacher of bass and music retailer, who took over the store from his father Claude Raymond HENRY his death on 10th Sept. 1850, married on 12th May 1851 in Sombernon (21) Philiberte Marie LAPOSTOLET and to differentiate his father had associated his name to that of his wife: HENRY-Lapostolet hence the confusion between these name and surname.

this luthier manufactured not so many instruments and they are exposed in famous museums,

 maple wooden bottom, ribs, and scroll º
 ebony wooden fingerboard ;

 Body length from the back: 360 mm
 width of the body top from the back: 173 mm
 Centre width: 120 mm
 Lower body width: 204 mm
 Alcohol paint of orange/brown colour, with yellow base; 
the violin is shipped with a case and a study bow.
