This color litograph by Raimund Girke (1930–2002) is a example of his exploration of painterly reduction and rhythm. Raimund Girke was a key figure in post-war German abstraction and one of the most consistent exponents of "analytical painting." He is especially known for his exploration of white and near-monochrome surfaces, creating works that evoke calm intensity and a contemplative spatiality. His works are represented in major collections, including the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, and international institutions.

Girke was associated with the Zero movement and shared affinities with contemporaries such as Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günther Uecker. His painterly discipline also resonates with the reductive strategies of Minimal and Conceptual Art. His oeuvre can be placed in dialogue with German and European contemporaries such as Gotthard Graubner, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, Günther Förg, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Emil Schumacher, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Walter Stöhrer, Hans Hartung, Bernard Schultze, Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter, and Hermann Glöckner. Beyond Germany, his work converses with Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, François Morellet, and Pierre Soulages, while also finding parallels with American minimalism and colour field painting in the work of Robert Ryman, Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko. Girke’s art thus occupies a crucial position between European post-war abstraction and international minimalism, distinguished by its meditative precision and spiritual engagement with the possibilities of painting beyond representation.
