Knochen - Schädel Wächter Figur der Kota aus Gabun

Früher wurden Verstorbene im Wald ausgelegt, später in der Erde bestattet. Die Schädel von bedeutenden Klan-Gründern und Häuptlingen wurden nach einiger Zeit wieder ausgegraben und, in einer Art ‘Sekundär-Bestattung’, mit anderen Erinnerungs-Stücken, in große Körbe gelegt. Diese Körbe wurden verschlossen und in eigenen Hütten, ‘heiligen Schreinen’, aufbewahrt. Wurde das Dorf verlegt, kamen die Körbe mit den Knochen der Ahnen mit und im neuen Dorf wurde für sie ein neuer, eigener ‘Schrein’ errichtet.
