Clearly painted view on Venlo by Sef Moonen (Moonen, Jozef Maria Hubertus Antonius) painted for the 2nd world war. The canvas is painted from the Blerick side. At the top left you see the cement factory, besides you see the St. Martinus church, at the right the Ol. Vrouwekerk. The painted stood in front of a little brook that flows into the The Maas that streams to the left. At the left is also a beacon for the shipping. The chosen spot is extra special because it was here that at the end of World War Two the allied army was obstructed for a long time by the German army. The work is in original good condition without restoration, in self-made frame. At the left and right side of the canvas, is a light, non-disturbing vertical track visible from the stretcher. Sef Moonen is richly represented in the Limburg Museum. Also the Museum Van Bommel van Dam has owned his work. Sef Moonen got trained in high school drawing in 1929, the Rijks academy of visual arts (Amsterdam) 1931-1933 and the Academy for Visual Arts (Rotterdam) 1939-1940. He got educated by among others prof. J.H. Jurres, R. Roland Holst and H.J. Wolter. Later he had many students himself including Pierre van Soest.
