On Friday evening, August 8, 1980, Frank Sinatra was in Monte Carlo for the traditional Monegasque Red Cross gala.

 “The Voice,” as he was long known in the United States, immediately brings to mind a series of images: the musicals of the 1940s with Gene Kelly, the Hollywood dramas of the 1950s, the Sicilian at heart and in spirit whose portrait was indirectly sketched—to his disadvantage—in The Godfather, the clan leader who thought he was the center of the universe and campaigned for John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1960 before changing sides, the businessman who managed a huge fortune spread across Sinatra Enterprises and various radio stations and music publishing companies.
At sixty-five, Frank Sinatra appears to be in exceptional form, clearly enjoying “setting up” a song, playing with the lyrics, making the most of every word and every note, taking a cliché and restoring its originality, combining tenderness and exuberance, enveloping a ballad in infinite delicacy, and finishing with bursts of swing or touches of humor.
