Stampata postuma nel 1567 a Parma da Seth Viotti, questa rara edizione degli Ultimi quattro libri dell'Historie d’Italia di Francesco Guicciardini costituisce il completamento dell’opera che ha definito la storiografia politica del Rinascimento. Redatti negli ultimi anni di vita, questi capitoli finali sono pervasi da un tono più cupo e disilluso, offrendo una lettura lucida e penetrante del declino italiano sotto la pressione delle potenze straniere.
MARKET VALUE
Le edizioni seicentesche complete dell’Historia d’Italia sono relativamente comuni, ma la stampa parmense del 1567, che contiene esclusivamente gli ultimi quattro libri (spesso mancanti nei volumi veneziani o fiorentini), è molto più rara. Esemplari collazionati e completi come questo, anche se rifasciati, possono raggiungere quotazioni comprese tra 1.500 e 2.500 euro. Il valore cresce se l’esemplare presenta provenienze illustri o è conservato in legatura antica.

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
Questo volume chiude il vasto affresco politico iniziato da Guicciardini con la sua Historia d’Italia, edita per la prima volta a Firenze nel 1561. Gli ultimi quattro libri, che coprono gli anni dal 1534 al 1540, furono lasciati inediti alla morte dell’autore e pubblicati solo in seguito, con toni più amari e riflessivi. In essi, Guicciardini analizza con maggiore distacco la crisi delle istituzioni italiane, la perdita di autonomia delle corti locali e l’avanzare inarrestabile delle potenze straniere. Il linguaggio è più netto, la critica al papato più esplicita, e lo stile storiografico si fa quasi testamentario. L’edizione Viotti ha grande valore storico-editoriale, poiché si basa su manoscritti ancora molto vicini all’autografo.

AUTHOR'S BIOGRAPHY
Francesco Guicciardini (1483–1540), uomo politico, ambasciatore e storico fiorentino, fu una delle figure più lucide del Rinascimento italiano. Amico e rivale di Machiavelli, Guicciardini ricoprì incarichi di governo sotto il papato e i Medici, ma si distinse soprattutto per la sua produzione storiografica, improntata a un realismo disilluso e a una visione critica del potere. La sua Historia d’Italia è un’opera capitale per la comprensione del Cinquecento italiano, con uno sguardo privo di illusioni sul declino della penisola.

PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
L’opera principale fu stampata a Firenze da Lorenzo Torrentino nel 1561, mentre questi ultimi quattro libri, redatti tra il 1537 e il 1540, uscirono separatamente a Parma nel 1567 per i tipi di Seth Viotti. L’editore parmense, ben inserito nel circuito umanistico e storiografico dell’Italia settentrionale, fu tra i primi a riconoscere l’importanza di integrare il corpus guicciardiniano con questi capitoli terminali. A lungo trascurata dalle edizioni veneziane e fiorentine, questa stampa rappresenta oggi un tassello fondamentale per gli studiosi dell'opera guicciardiniana.
