We present a really beautiful teeth of the Basilosaurus and this teeth is infact the canine of this ancient whale. We believe its in natural state after detailed inspection, however, there is always possibility of hard to tell restoration or minor repair. Nevertheless, one can firmly say, this teeth is in excellent state. As Basilosaurus fossils are found in very tough rock or hardened sand like ground, so finding high quality teeth are a rare find. The teeth has been professionally conserved to make it long lasting.


Please refer to detailed photos for reference. In two of the photos, it looks like a whale jumping and diving back into water! It is possible that this teeth belong to a juvenile Basilosaurus.

Some words about Basilosaurus...

Basilosaurus were ancient whales with a long list of unique facts about it.

One of those fascinating fact being their teeth. Their teeth can be divided into two types i.e., the  front incisors & canines and the back molars. All those teeth have unique shapes and curves. The molars were used to cutting and shearing of the prey while the incisor & canines were used to bite and hold onto and puncture the prey  with powerful biting force. One special prey of Basilosaurus included Dorudon , which were infact smaller members of Basilosaurid family. There is evidence of Basilosaurus crushing the skulls of Dorudon during the spectacular prey-predator interaction.
