The most stunning decorative ceramics from {name}

Sophie Aziz

This is West German pottery at its most dramatic. Standing a commanding 40 cm tall, this Übelacker Keramik vase is a substantial, room-defining piece with a glaze that tells a story from bottom to top — matte black at the base, rising through bands of earthy brown and sandy tones, before erupting into a vivid, glossy coral-red at the shoulder and neck. Where the colours meet, a dark, almost volcanic transition creates a raw, organic edge that gives this style its legendary "Fat Lava" reputation.

The form is bold and confident: a wide, bulbous body sits on a sturdy cylindrical foot, tapering to a distinctive flared rim with a dark matte finish. It has real visual weight and sculptural presence — the kind of piece that anchors a shelf, a sideboard, or a corner of a room all on its own.

The base is stamped with the model number 534/40, confirming its attribution to Übelacker (also known as Ü-Keramik), one of the celebrated Höhr-Grenzhausen potteries in Germany's Westerwald region. For collectors of West German Art Pottery, Übelacker pieces in this size and condition are always in demand. And the condition here is excellent. No chips, no cracks, no repairs, no restorations. The glazes are vibrant and fully intact. This vase looks as good today as the day it left the kiln over fifty years ago.
