Beautiful hand-colored woodcut of a "Struthocamelo" from the FIRST EDITION of Gesner's "Icones animalium quadrupedum uiuiparorum et ouiparorum". From the first edition, being the Latin edition.

This beautiful woodcut is one of the most famous woodcuts from Conrad Gesner's bird book.

Conrad Gesner is considered the father of modern scientific bibliography, zoology, and botany.
He was a polymath, physician, philosopher, bibliographer, philologist, natural historian, and illustrator from the Renaissance who spent most of his time collecting, researching, and writing. He compiled monumental works on bibliography (Bibliotheca universalis 1545-1549) and zoology (Historia Animalium 1551-1558). This woodcut was published in the third volume of the "Historia Animalium," dedicated to birds.

Good condition, with a small stain and an old crease in the white border.

Occasionally, two different bidders may show up in the bidding history with the same bid amount. This occurs when one user's bid is exactly the same as an automatic (maximum) bid placed by another user earlier. Since the auto-bid was placed first, this takes preference. The bidding history will show both bids, with the auto-bid ranked as the higher of the two.
