André-Léon Vivrel est né en 1886 à Paris. À seulement 15 ans, il décide de devenir peintre. Il est soutenu dans cette voie par sa mère, qu'il décrit comme son premier maître, et son père, négociant en vin et Premier prix de dessin en 1870. Elève au lycée Louis-le-Grand, André-Léon Vivrel rentre à l'Académie Julian en 1910. Il y suit les enseignements de Paul Albert Laurens puis fréquente l'atelier de Marcel Baschet et d'Henri Royer à l'École des Beaux-Arts. Il loue un atelier à Montmartre, au 65 rue Caulaincourt, à seulement huit numéros de celui d'Auguste Renoir. Sa première participation au Salon des artistes français date de 1913. Mobilisé en 1914, il reçoit la Croix de guerre pour conduite héroïque en 1917. Après la guerre, il retrouve son atelier montmartrois. Il se voit décerner une mention honorable au Salon de 1920 et l'État lui achète les deux natures-mortes qu'il expose au Salon des indépendants. Il y présente également deux portraits de Bretonne peints au retour d'un séjour à Ploumanac'h (Côtesss d'Armor). En 1922, Vivrel apparaît pour la première fois au Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Après avoir reçu le prix Deldebat de Gonzalva en 1932, il obtient, l'année suivante, une médaille d'argent au Salon des artistes français avec « Le Temps des cerises ». En 1934, Vivrel présente des baigneuses, premier tableau d'une série de grands nus envoyés au Salon jusqu'en 1943. Aboutissement de sa recherche sur le nu féminin, ses « Baigneuses » de 1939 sont gratifiées d'une médaille d'or au Salon des artistes français.
Cette ultime récompense couronne une médaille d'argent obtenue par Vivrel en 1937, lors de l'Exposition internationale des Arts et Techniques de Paris. La critique salue unanimement son talent et, en 1940, Louis Paillard n'hésite pas à écrire à la une du « Petit journal » du 6 mai 1940 : « André Vivrel, apparaît je le proclame, comme l'un des meilleurs en ce Salon [des artistes français] ». L'exposition « Vivrel - peintures récentes », organisée par la Galerie de Berri en mai 1942, illustre, en 31 tableaux, la diversité des genres abordés par Vivrel mais c'est celui du paysage qu'il explore avec le plus de passion. Sa terre d'élection est le Loiret, où son frère aîné Marcel possède une résidence secondaire à Châtillon-sur-Loire, non loin de Champtoceaux. Aux lendemains de la Grande Guerre, désargenté, il s'y réfugie pour peindre sur le motif à moindres frais. Au printemps 1926, Vivrel est de nouveau en Bretagne, d'où il rapporte le « Port de Camaret » exposé au Salon des Tuileries de 1926. Quelques années plus tard, en 1934, il retourne en Côtes d'Armor, où il compose des marines qui sont autant d'études de ciel. Vivrel passe l'été 1926 en Corse. Il y réalise des aquarelles qui sont présentées, dès l'automne, à la Galerie Georges Petit puis à New York. À chaque fois, une critique unanime vante leurs qualités: « L'exposition d'André Vivrel est d'un artiste sensible, fin, tout en restant larggge dans ses conceptions. Ses vues de Corse, de Bretagne et de Paris sont comme ses fleurs délicatement harmonieuses » (« La Semaine à Paris », 12 novembre 1926, p.
63). En 1928, il se rend de nouveau dans le Midi. Restituant la chaude et vibrante lumière de Provence, il peint « Le port de Saint-Tropez » exposé, la même année, au Salon des Indépendants. Le thème de la Méditerranée s'impose également au Salon des Tuileries, où Vivrel présente des vues de port et des paquebots, témoins d'une industrie touristique florissante. Quand Vivrel n'est pas sur les routes de France, il prend Paris pour modèle. Il peint les ruelles de la butte Montmartre et les monuments de la capitale, comme la cathédrale Notre-Dame, qu'il décline en série à l'instar de Monet. Il aime à s'attarder sur les quais de la Seine, qui lui offrent de nombreux points de vue insolites sur la ville et lui inspirent des peintures qui ne sont pas sans rappeler les paysages parisiens d'Albert Lebourg. Peignant jusqu'à son dernier souffle, André-Léon Vivrel s'éteint à Bonneville-sur-Touques, le 7 juin 1976.
