We are pleased to present the timeless TED folding chair, an enduring masterpiece designed by Niels Gammelgaard for IKEA. We are pleased to announce that we currently showcasing this iconic folding chair in a vibrant red color, which is now available for purchase out of our own private collection.

Introduced in 1976, the TED folding chair rapidly gained a reputation as a much-loved classic. The chair's distinctive curved backrest provides optimal comfort, and it has been recognized as the most comfortable and cost-effective folding chair on the market following consumer testing by Möbelfakta.

This new item will bring a vibrant pop of color to any space while providing the comfort and practicality that the TED chair is renowned for.

Overall, the chairs are in fantastic vintage condition! They have just a few scratches here and there and some paint loss on some of the chairs, but that just adds to their character. 

Comment Niels Gammelgaard:

As a designer, it was my responsibility to accompany the buyers on factory visits to ensure that our products could be produced according to their specifications. During one such visit, we proceeded to a substantial factory in Italy that produced a considerable volume of goods for IKEA. While the buyer was engaged in negotiations in the office, I undertook a tour of the factory with a view to gaining insight into their production process. In their model workshop, I collaborated with their skilled craftsmen to develop a new chair. Just before our departure, the buyer took my chair to the conference room and guaranteed that if the factory could produce them for 16 kronor (EUR 1.6), IKEA would purchase 500,000 over the following three years.

"After that, there was no further communication on the matter for a considerable period of time." However, at the range viewing in spring 1977, it was featured extensively, in a variety of colors, and presented as that year's new product. The chair offered superior comfort, featuring a back curve that was twice as deep as that of other chairs on the market. The chair had been approved in Möbelfakta consumer tests and was the best and least expensive folding chair on the market.

Occasionally, two different bidders may show up in the bidding history with the same bid amount. This occurs when one user's bid is exactly the same as an automatic (maximum) bid placed by another user earlier. Since the auto-bid was placed first, this takes preference.
