Émile Gallé (1846–1904) war ein französischer Designer, der die Glasproduktion am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts revolutionierte. Er reagierte auf wenig inspirierende Historismus-Stile und entwickelte neue Formen und Techniken, die die Art Nouveau Epoche prägten.

Meisterhafte Glas-Techniken

Gallé ist bekannt für naturinspirierte Motive: Pflanzen, Blumen, Libellen und Landschaften der Vogesen. Zu seinen Techniken gehören:

    Farbloses Kristallglas mit handgemalter Dekoration
    Opaleszierendes Glas mit Emailmalerei
    Marquetterie de verre (Glaseinlegearbeiten)
    Ätzen mehrerer Glaslagen für feine Motive

Die wertvollsten Vasen kombinieren diese Techniken mit Applikationen, zusätzlichen heißen Glasstücken, die anschließend graviert werden. Vasen von 1904–1906 tragen einen Gedenkstern für Gallé, Vasen von 1920–1938 sind heute besonders geschätzt.
