– A Japanese cloisonné (shippō) dish from the celebrated Andō Shippō Shōten workshop
– Worked with a chrysanthemum-blossom design (kikkamon) and finished with an elegant silver rim
– Generously sized at 29.2 cm wide and only 2.8 cm high, weighing 873 g – ideal for centrepiece display

Summary: A wide, low cloisonné dish from Andō Shippō Shōten, one of the most respected Japanese cloisonné houses since the late nineteenth century. The plate is decorated with a flowing chrysanthemum design (kikkamon), defined by carefully laid silver wires and filled with smooth, lustrous enamels, then finished with a refined silver rim. At 29.2 cm across and weighing 873 g, it has real presence as a centrepiece dish or wall display, and appeals strongly to European collectors of Meiji and twentieth-century Japanese decorative arts.

The Andō name occupies a particular place in Japanese cloisonné history. Established in 1880 in Nagoya by Andō Jūbei, the workshop quickly became one of the small group of houses that elevated Japanese shippō to international prominence at the great Meiji-era expositions in Europe and the United States, and was eventually granted appointment to the Imperial Household. Its work is held in many of the world's leading museum collections.

The chrysanthemum is the great signature flower of Japanese decorative art – associated with longevity, with autumn, and with the imperial family itself. Treated here in a circular composition that radiates outward across the plate, it transforms the dish into a kind of formal mandala of petals.

The silver rim is more than decoration. Andō dishes were often given silver or silver-plated rims as a mark of quality, framing the enamelled surface and lifting it physically off the surface on which it rested.

In a contemporary European interior, an Andō dish reads as both museum object and useful piece. It works as a flat centrepiece on a dining table, a key object on an entrance console, a wall-mounted decorative panel, or simply a luxurious tray for keys, glasses, or candles.

Condition appears very good, with the enamel surface clean and the silver rim well preserved. There are only the gentle marks of age and use consistent with a piece of this kind.

A confident, very desirable example of Japanese cloisonné from one of the greatest names in the field.
