Anton Bruehl (1900-1982) figura come uno dei pionieri più significativi della fotografia a colori commerciale degli anni Trenta, sebbene la sua carriera rappresenti un paradigma interessante delle dinamiche tra arte e commercio nella fotografia americana del periodo interbellico.
Nato in Australia, da genitori emigrati dalla Germania, Bruehl si trasferì negli Stati Uniti nel 1919 per lavorare come ingegnere elettrico, possedendo già competenze fotografiche consolidate. La sua svolta professionale avvenne nel 1923, quando una mostra di lavori studenteschi della Clarence H. White School of Photography lo convinse ad abbandonare l'ingegneria per dedicarsi completamente alla fotografia. White lo formò privatamente per sei mesi, dopo di che Bruehl divenne insegnante nella stessa scuola.
Dopo la morte improvvisa di White nel 1925, Bruehl aprì il proprio studio a New York, inizialmente in collaborazione con Ralph Steiner e successivamente con il fratello maggiore Martin Bruehl. Il successo fu immediato, specializzandosi in tableaux che gli valsero i principali premi pubblicitari tra la fine degli anni Venti e l'inizio degli anni Trenta.

Nel 1931 Alma Reed espose le fotografie non commerciali di Bruehl nella sua galleria newyorkese, i Delphic Studios. Fervente sostenitrice dell'arte e degli artisti messicani, potrebbe aver ispirato il viaggio estivo di Bruehl in Messico nel 1932, le cui immagini furono esposte nel 1933 e pubblicate come collotipie dalla stessa galleria.

Collotipia: la collotipia si distingue dalle altre tecniche di stampa fotomeccanica per la sua capacità di riprodurre immagini senza ricorrere ai retini di mezzetinte. Il processo si basa su una lastra di vetro o metallo rivestita con una soluzione di gelatina fotosensibile che, una volta esposta alla luce attraverso un negativo fotografico, si indurisce nelle aree esposte secondo l'intensità luminosa ricevuta. La gelatina indurita diventa idrofoba e quindi ricettiva all'inchiostro grasso, mentre le aree non esposte rimangono idrofile e respingono l'inchiostro.
Le qualità distintive della collotipia sono molteplici. La tecnica eccelle nella riproduzione di opere d'arte e fotografie con precisione eccezionale, catturando dettagli intricati, gradazioni tonali sottili e un'ampia gamma cromatica.
Negli anni '30, quando l'industria editoriale e pubblicitaria americana attraversava una fase di straordinaria espansione, la collotipia rappresentava l'apice dell'arte tipografica nella riproduzione fotografica. Questa tecnica di stampa, inventata dal chimico francese Alphonse Poitevin nel 1855, aveva raggiunto una maturità tecnica negli anni '30 che la rendeva insostituibile per ottenere riproduzioni di qualità museale.

Anton Bruehl (1900–1982) is considered one of the most significant pioneers of commercial color photography in the 1930s, although his career represents an interesting paradigm of the dynamics between art and commerce in American photography during the interwar period.
Born in Australia to parents who had emigrated from Germany, Bruehl moved to the United States in 1919 to work as an electrical engineer, already possessing solid photographic skills. His professional breakthrough came in 1923, when an exhibition of student work at the Clarence H. White School of Photography convinced him to abandon engineering to devote himself fully to photography. White trained him privately for six months, after which Bruehl became a teacher at the same school.
After White's sudden death in 1925, Bruehl opened his own studio in New York, initially in collaboration with Ralph Steiner and later with his older brother Martin Bruehl. His success was immediate, specializing in tableaux, which earned him major advertising awards in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

In 1929, Anton Bruehl participated in the historic "Film und Foto" (FiFo) exhibition, held in Stuttgart at the Städtische Ausstellungshallen. The curators of the exhibition included Edward Steichen, Edward Weston, László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. Participants included the most prestigious names in contemporary photography: Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Walker Evans, Man Ray, Tina Modotti, László Moholy-Nagy, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand and Edward Weston.

In 1931, Alma Reed exhibited Bruehl's non-commercial photographs at her New York gallery, Delphic Studios. An ardent supporter of Mexican art and artists, she may have inspired Bruehl's summer trip to Mexico in 1932, the images of which were exhibited in 1933 and published as collotypes by the same gallery.

A copy of the "Dolores" collotype is part of the MoMA collection.

Collotype: Collotype differs from other photomechanical printing techniques in its ability to reproduce images without the use of halftone screens. The process relies on a glass or metal plate coated with a photosensitive gelatin solution. When exposed to light through a photographic negative, the exposed areas harden according to the intensity of the light received. The hardened gelatin becomes hydrophobic and therefore receptive to greasy ink, while the unexposed areas remain hydrophilic and repel ink.
Collotype has many distinctive qualities. The technique excels at reproducing artwork and photographs with exceptional precision, capturing intricate details, subtle tonal gradations, and a wide color gamut.
In the 1930s, when the American publishing and advertising industries were experiencing extraordinary expansion, collotype represented the pinnacle of typographic art in photographic reproduction. This printing technique, invented by French chemist Alphonse Poitevin in 1855, had reached a technical maturity by the 1930s that made it indispensable for achieving museum-quality reproductions.
