Hans Pruijn is een exponent van figuratieve schilderkunst op het nationale toneel.
Zijn figuratie wortelt in het surrealisme en heeft een humoristische inslag.
De figuren hebben een realistisch en dramatisch karakter door hun verschijningsvorm, hun houding (veelal op de rug of van opzij gezien), door de omgeving waarin zij verschijnen.
Het is werk met een sterk emotionele uitstraling, die niet op ingewikkelde bedoelingen is gestoeld maar simpelweg steunen op de kracht van verbeelding en ambachtelijke vaardigheid om emoties weer te geven en zo stemmingen op te roepen. Hij slaagt erin het ambacht van het schilderen niet zo absoluut te maken dat de schilderijen eronder zouden bezwijken. Zijn doeken tonen veel variatie, ook qua stijl. Het werk is zowel realistisch en zorgvuldig gedetailleerd - beschaafd - als wild en abstract - rauw. Die combinatie maakt zijn werk aantrekkelijk en zorgt veelal voor visueel spektakel.
Hans weet altijd een juiste hoeveelheid luchtigheid in zijn werk te stoppen, die de schilderijen een hedendaagse relevantie geeft.

De mens en natuur in zijn of haar omgeving vormt het uitgangspunt in het werk van Hans Pruijn.
De ruimtelijkheid en het zich onderdeel voelen daarvan fascineren hem. Deze fascinatie wordt door hem vertaald in buitengewoon boeiende en vaak expressieve beelden.
Een mens, landschappelijke elementen, een verwijzing naar architectuur. 'Schilderen is je eigen verhaal vertellen. Ik houd de werkelijkheid op een afstand, zodat ik deze naar mijn hand kan zetten en kan manipuleren zoals ik dat wil'.
Als toeschouwer kun je de fantasie de vrije loop laten en telkens andere interpretaties aan zijn werk geven. De suggestief aangebrachte elementen geven het werk soms een onderhuidse lading. Ruim opgezet en met een soms brutale materiaalbehandeling wordt een bepaalde stemming in het werk aangebracht.
De figuren plaatst hij veelal in een mythische omgeving zodat sommige beelden iets 'dromerigs' krijgen, ondanks zijn directe en pure manier van werken. Hij gebruikt de verf vaak direct uit een tube. Een andere keer werkt hij in sterk verdunde vorm of gebruikt hij spuitbussen. Dit geeft meer kracht en snelheid. Op een bepaald moment lijken zijn gevoelens duidelijk, een fractie later is dat moment weer voorbij.
Het is monumentaal werk dat een voorname maar bewogen expressieve kwaliteit bezit. Laat men de ogen dwalen dan neem je deel aan een ontdekkingstocht die je steeds voor nieuwe verrassingen plaatst.

Als of we in hogere regionen verkeren...
Maar, toegegeven kunstkijken is een inspanning. Hoe kijk je? Hoelang? Met welke blik en vanuit welke achtergrond.
De schilderijen van Hans Pruijn (1957) laten je niet zomaar gaan. Hij is een verfbeest van allure. En verfbeesten komen graag bij Guus Dijkhuizen in Klas Vijf. Daar is iedereen na 9 tentoonstellingen wel zo'n beetje achter. Pruijn verft. Hij verft dat het een lieve lust is en zinderend en vol zijn penseelstreken en kleuren. Heftig werk. Durf ernaar te kijken, dan zuigt het je op. En sleept het je mee. Wat zien we? Dat is bij Pruijn niet alleen een ambachtelijke kwestie. Zijn schilderijen, die lekker groot zijn, relativeren, duiden, analyseren, dromen en verleiden. En er staan mensen op. Er gebeurt altijd wat, maar je krijgt het niet cadeau. Als een schilderij van Pruijn je raakt, dan ben je verkocht. Neem nou het doek 'Drie meter voor de lunch'. Gebogen figuren zijn op het land bezig. Er wordt gerooid, geoogst. Zo meteen zal het gegeten worden. Het voedsel. Rauw of gekookt. Maakt niet uit. Voor wie? Dat hoef je niet te weten. Op de voorgrond zien we een attachékoffer. Een kantoorkoffertje waarin je behalve documenten en paperassen je lunch kunt meenemen. Je aardappelslaatje of boterhammen. Met een stukje lekkers of fruit. Wie vraagt zich af, als hij een boterham of muesli eet, wat daar allemaal aan vooraf ging...
Dat soort dingen dus. Of het schilderij 'Bouwer' waarop een jochie en een klein hijskraantje en een flinke stapel basaltblokken die natuurlijk nooit door dat kleine kraantje kunnen worden gehesen.
Een galerie zou vol moeten zijn van mensen die zich verbazen over wat ze zien, die erom lachen of die gepakt zijn.
En er vervolgens met elkaar over praten...

Hans Pruijn is een schoolvoorbeeld van de opkomende trend in figuratieve schilderkunst met een surrealistisch tintje.
Hij vervormt, overdrijft, zet dik aan, kortom hij verhevigt de werkelijkheid.
De melancholie ligt op de loer in zijn werk, maar toch stemmen zijn schilderijen niet somber. De werken bevatten veelal open ruimtes, waarin de kijker zich met zijn gedachte kan verliezen. Juist doordat Pruijn het 'groteske' zo intensief bespeelt, word je niet meegezogen in de treurigheid, zink je niet weg in het lege blikveld van zijn anonieme figuren.
Bij een karikatuur horen extreem uitvergrote details en vleugjes humor en dat is bij Pruijn's werk in ruime mate terug te vinden.
Pruijn weet zowel details als de grote context overtuigend weer te geven, waardoor hij de onderhuidse sfeer in zijn werk optimaal kan bespelen. Hij laat zien dat het persoonlijk verhalende weer waarde heeft binnen de kunst, na de stroom van koele registrerende observaties van de werkelijkheid in het afgelopen decennium.

Als Hans Pruijn de achtergronden van zijn schilderijen op het doek zet, gebruikt hij vast een metseltroffel in plaats van een kwast of paletmes. Dramatische verftoetsen voor heftige landschappen, met donkere onweersluchten boven wijde panorama's. En dan staat er in dat bewogen decor ineens een man in een slecht zittend pak, die zwijgend naar zijn jojo kijkt, veel fijner geschilderd dan zijn omgeving. Het effect is surrealistisch. Door een combinatie van heftige en ingehouden verftoetsen heeft zijn werk iets weg van de hele mooie schilderijen en interpretaties van Spaanse barokschilders als Murillo. Dan maakt het niet uit of de figuren een veld met kolen aan het oogsten zijn, of dat ze een sensuele tango dansen. Dat net iets te veel aan drama maakt Pruijn's schilderijen juist zo sterk en 'leuk'.

Hans is een schilder die op een vaardige manier suggestie en figuratie in één beeld weet samen te brengen. Hij zoekt naar het spanningsveld tussen betekenisgeving en materie en weet zo de kijker expressieve dramatische beelden voor te schotelen.

Een lijn door het werk van Hans Pruijn vormt de structurele tweestrijd tussen mens, natuur en cultuur. Het realisme krijgt in zijn werk een onwerkelijke uitstraling. Verschillende culturen, tijden en sferen worden gecombineerd en als in een collage met elkaar verbonden. Het laat zijn beeldmotieven een vreemde intensiteit uitstralen. Zijn werk is dynamisch en expressief. De grenzen tussen licht en schaduw, lucht, land en mens zijn scherp. De kleuren zijn sterk en rijk aan contrast, bovendien wordt de verf opvallend krachtig aangebracht. Het perspectief verstrekt deze dynamische indruk. Zijn personages plaatst hij veelal op de voorgrond van zijn schilderijen, in zichzelf verzonken, buitengesloten van de achtergrond. Soms valt je oog op een kleur of op een wonderlijke kwaststreek. Dan valt pas op dat geen van de figuren je aankijkt. Het werk krijgt hierdoor een bewust anoniem karakter voor de beschouwer. De blik is afgewend. Alsof het portret bepaald wordt door het gegeven dat er één blik bestaat die bestemd is voor de buitenwereld en één die bestemd is voor de geportretteerde zelf. Zo projecteert hij zijn verlangen en dromen op de belevingswereld van zijn geschilderde personages. Het spel van de kleuren snijdt de relaties tussen mens en omgeving niet helemaal van elkaar af maar schept ook samenhang. Toch wordt de werkelijkheid op een afstand gehouden waardoor uw fantasie onbeperkt wordt geprikkeld.

Over Hans Pruijn

Hans Pruijn (1957) studeerde af aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten te Arnhem. Hij woont en werkt in zijn atelierwoning met “TOONKAMER” aan de Steynlaan te Zeist waar hij zijn schilderijen tentoonstelt veelal in combinatie met werk van bevriende kunstenaars. Een lijn door zijn werk vormt de structurele tweestrijd tussen mens/natuur en cultuur. Zinderend en vol is zijn materiaalgebruik en kleur. Durf ernaar te kijken dan zuigt het je op. Zijn schilderijen relativeren, duiden, analyseren, dromen en verleiden. Het gaat hem meer om de sfeer en ervaring van een landschap weer te geven dan een exacte, natuurgetrouwe weergave van de werkelijkheid. Door de vaak aanwezige palen in zijn geschilderde landschappen is er altijd ‘een weg’ terug, zij geven houvast/stabiliteit. een gangbare route in ons leven.
