Sculpture, traveler - 16 cm - Bronze patinated spelter mounted on a wooden base - 1900

This charming and detailed metal sculpture serves as an antique decorative table piece, likely intended as a smoker's accessory. The figurine depicts a traveler, peddler (hawker) from the 18th or 19th century. He is dressed in historical attire and carries a substantial, woven basket on his back, suggesting he is a working man on his journey. He stands leaning on a cane/staff, with a small traveling trunk/box at his feet. The figure is set on a cobblestone-textured metal base, which is mounted onto a circular, ebonised wooden plinth. Functionality: To the right of the figure, there is a small, bowl-shaped receptacle, likely used as an ashtray or possibly a holder for matches. Later it has been used to put in a candle. Material: The sculpture is made of spelter (zinc alloy) with a dark, antique bronze patina. The base is made of wood. Dating: This piece is characteristic of the late Historicism or Art Nouveau / Edwardian period, commonly dated around 1890–1920. Such figurines were highly popular as decorative items for offices and smoking rooms. Condition: In good antique condition, commensurate with age and use. Both the sculpture and the wooden base show wear and tear. Secured shipping with tracking code.
