Sterling silver sugar shaker – Henry Clifford Davis (HCD) – Birmingham, 1955. Baluster-shaped shaker with a removable, perforated dome and flame knob. Clean Georgian Revival lines with fine triple piping around the body, on a profiled round base. Timeless on the table, perfect for sugar or icing sugar. Hallmarks Marked on the neck with: HCD (maker's mark Henry Clifford Davis), anchor (Birmingham Assay Office), lion passant (sterling), date latter 1955, plus 925. Stamped "ENGLAND" on the underside. Height: 15.5 cm Diameter (belly): approx. 6 cm Weight: 86 g Condition: Very fine condition with a bright sheen; normal, minimal signs of wear/polishing consistent with age, no dents. Henry Clifford Davis registered his first maker's mark with the Birmingham Assay Office in 1901; marks later followed in Chester (1910). The firm operated in the Jewellery Quarter (including Vyse Street), then moved to Harford Works, Harford Street, and produced a wide range of fancy silverware—from silverware and tableware to Art Deco (sometimes enameled) vanity pieces. The company operated under H. Clifford Davis and later as H. C. Davis Ltd., and was active until the 1950s/60s.
