Objects can be used with the Minolta SR bayonet. There is a wide range of lenses available for this mount. This model does not yet have an autofocus system; focus must be manually adjusted for each shot.

Partially automated are the exposure settings. The camera features an automatic mode where the aperture is manually set, and the camera technology selects the appropriate shutter speed. There is also a manual mode, where shutter speed and aperture can be freely chosen. The Minolta XG-M is the only model in the XG series that also displays the results of the light measurement in manual mode.

The shutter supports times from 1/1000 second to 1 second. There is also a Bulb mode for long exposures. For shake-free shots, you can mount the camera on a tripod using the thread on the bottom. A self-timer and a connection for a wired remote are available.

A flash can be connected via cable. A flash unit with a Hot Shoe can also be used. The fastest shutter speed when using a flash is 1/60 second.
The Minolta MD Rokkor 45mm f/2 is characterized by being a particularly flat, so-called 'pancake lens' among Minolta's manual lenses.

Extremely lightweight: Weighing only 125 grams and measuring approximately 30 mm in length on the camera body, it is one of Minolta's lightest manual lenses.

Unique focal length: The 45mm focal length closely corresponds to the 43mm diagonal in the 35mm film format, providing a more comfortable and natural viewing experience than a typical 50mm standard lens.

The camera requires two SR44 batteries for the light meter.
