Ancient Egyptian Late Period faience shabti, about 10 cm high, in excellent condition, wearing a tripartite wig and beard and holding a pick and hoe with a basket at the back, dating to the 26th–30th Dynasty (c. 664–343 B.C.), with display stand and certificate of authenticity, acquired from the United Kingdom in 2020 from the Bodo Bleß collection via Bonham’s, Berlin provenance, legally exported.
Description from the seller
Of light green glazed faience, wearing tripartite wig and beard, holding the pick and hoe, and typical basket incised at the back.
The primary function of shabtis was to act as labourers for the deceased in the Field of Reeds, a heavenly paradise where the deceased continued their existence. It was believed that the deceased would be called upon to perform various tasks in the afterlife and the shabtis would serve as substitutes to carry out these responsibilities on their behalf.
