Masterfully Bidermeier still life with fruits was executed by listed Austrian painter of Dutch origin Leopold von (van) Stoll (b.1808). He was active in 1828 in Warsaw and Cracov and in 1830 - 1834 in St. Petersburg , where he was busy designing floral arrangements for the Botanic Gardens. In 1834 the artist came back to Austria to get popular acclaim for his wonderful paintings of flowers and fruits. Ermitage in St.Petersburg have a few still life and flowers paintings by Stoll.( Information from Cataloque of Ermitage , 1901). The artist is listed in : "Austrian Artists Dictionary "by Heinrich Fuchs, Vienna 1974 and " Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenen Künstler " by Thieme / Becker. Leipzig, 1999 Inscription: signed L. v. Stoll and dated 1844, lower right. Technique: oil on canvas. The back is covered with a wooden board. The canvas is on a stretcher, not glued to the board. Original period gold-plated frame. Measurements: unframed w 26 3/8" x h 21 2/3" (67 x 55 cm), framed w 34 1/4" xh 29 1/2" (87 x 75cm). Condition: in good condition.
