Large bowl ceremonial use - Santa Anna island - Solomon Islands (No reserve price)

his exceptional wooden bowl with shell inlay represents a fine and highly desirable example of Oceanic artistry. Carved from solid hardwood with great sensitivity to form and balance, the bowl is richly decorated with carefully set shell inlay that catches the light beautifully. On both sides, a stylised fish motif is depicted, symbolising abundance, fertility, and the close relationship between coastal communities and the sea. The craftsmanship is confident and mature, reflecting traditional knowledge passed down through generations. The surface shows a deep, natural patina, the result of age and use, enhancing the sculptural quality of the piece. The shell inlay is well preserved and harmoniously integrated into the wood, creating a striking visual contrast. Field collected in the 1990s, this bowl comes from an earlier period, before large-scale commercial production, and retains a strong sense of authenticity and cultural presence. Such bowls were often used in ceremonial or communal contexts, and examples of this quality are increasingly rare on the market. A powerful yet elegant object, this bowl would make a distinguished addition to any serious Oceanic art collection, museum-quality display, or curated interior. Secure, careful packaging and insured, tracked shipping will be provided. Sold by Koos Knol, ethnographer and anthropologist, dealer of Papua Tribal Art for more than 30 years, expert and author of the book “Papua Blues”, written in Dutch. (Maybe in English next year.)  Published end of October 2024 A book about inside stories, a book that deals with the many encounters with special people in West Papua, the impressive experiences that the author has, about special encounters with men and women who tell him about secret things, about ethnographic objects and initiate him into the rituals and ceremonies. A must have for collectors, ethnographers, ethnologists, anthropologists and museums   Google:Papua Blues Koos Knol
