Medal design : Seibo Kitamura (1884–1987)
Japanese sculptor from Nagasaki and one of the leading figures in modern Japanese sculpture.
He graduated at the top of his class from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1912 and soon gained recognition with major awards at the Bunten exhibitions.
Kitamura became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and later a member of the Imperial Art Academy, playing a central role in Japan’s official art circles.
His early works focused on powerful human figures, but after World War II his themes shifted toward peace and spirituality.
His most famous work is the Nagasaki Peace Statue (completed in 1955).
In 1958, he received the Order of Culture, one of Japan’s highest honors.
He continued creating art until his death at the age of 102.
