Émile Othon Friesz (1879–1949) was a major French painter of the Fauve movement, known for his vibrant landscapes and his quest for balance between tradition and modernity.
Born in Le Havre into a family of sailors, Friesz entered his hometown's School of Fine Arts at a very young age, where he befriended Raoul Dufy and Georges Braque. Thanks to a scholarship, he continued his training in Paris at Léon Bonnat's studio, but it was mainly at the Louvre Museum and through contact with the Impressionists that he developed his perspective. Influenced by Van Gogh, Gauguin, and especially Cézanne, he participated in the 1905 Salon d’automne alongside Matisse and Derain, in the famous 'den of the wild beasts' that gave its name to Fauvism.
Friesz then adopts a vibrant palette and an expressive style, as evidenced by his paintings created in La Ciotat with Braque in 1907, where Mediterranean light radiates through his compositions. However, by 1908, he shifts towards a more structured style, influenced by Cézanne, blending formal rigor with chromatic intensity.
Throughout his career, he alternated between landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and portraits, while teaching at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1937, he collaborated with Dufy on the decoration of the Palais de Chaillot. He died in Paris in 1949, leaving a rich body of work at the crossroads of Fauvist lyricism and French tradition.
