Description from the seller
Dining set, table and four chairs, following Hans Olsen, Modern Scandinavian, 60s – Denmark
Exquisite round extendable dining set with four teak wood chairs, closely following the design of the 'Roundette' set by Hans Olsen for Frem Røjle, an icon of mid-century modern Scandinavian design.
From its inception, the design was conceived as a sophisticated solution for small spaces, a goal that its designer pursued throughout his career. It is a simple yet sophisticated design, with clean, straight lines. The chairs, with only three legs, become entirely sculptural pieces that fit perfectly under the table's surface, and their backs adapt to its contour, creating a compact and visually streamlined set. Its organic and ergonomic shape, while elegant, is characteristic of the style. The contrast between the warmth of the wood and the elegance of the leather-upholstered seat is notable. The table features an extension that transforms it into an oval-top table, which can be stored folded in half inside.
About the style and modern Scandinavian design.
When we refer to Nordic style or Scandinavian design, we are talking about the northern European countries, specifically Sweden and Norway, but it also extends to Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. This style is characterized by its functionality, usefulness, formality, minimalism, timelessness, and durability, using local and environmentally friendly materials like wood. The stylistic elegance we know arrived thanks to the influence of early 20th-century decorative movements (Art Nouveau or Jugendstil) and the simplicity and purity of interwar artistic movements (Constructivism, De Stijl, Bauhaus...). An important reference point was the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, where designers mixed local materials with modernity to create comfortable and bright spaces.
In 1954, the concept of 'Scandinavian design' was coined, following an exhibition that toured North America under that name, promoting both the lifestyle and the decor of the Nordic countries.
