Born in Paris in 1886, André-Léon Vivrel quickly established himself as a sensitive witness of his time. Trained at the Académie Julian and then at the École des Beaux‑Arts, he settled in Montmartre, just a few steps from Renoir's studio, where he developed a vibrant style, nourished by direct observation and a remarkable mastery of light. Mobilized during the Great War, he returned to civilian life with renewed energy and regularly exhibited at the major Parisian Salons, where he was awarded multiple times.
Vivrel excels in depicting Paris: Montmartre alleys, Seine quays, anonymous silhouettes, and misty atmospheres that he captures with rare sensitivity. His watercolors and oils depict a Paris now vanished, imbued with poetry and truth, which gives his work a highly sought-after heritage value. He also explores Brittany, Loiret, and the Midi, bringing back from his travels luminous landscapes and fresh marine scenes.
A complete artist, notably awarded a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1939, Vivrel is today appreciated for the finesse of his gaze and the consistent quality of his execution. His works are included in several public collections, including the Musée Eugène‑Boudin in Honfleur and the Musée Mandet in Riom.
André‑Léon Vivrel's works captivate collectors with their timeless atmosphere, technical mastery, and ability to evoke an authentic Paris. Whether it's an urban landscape, a Breton marine, or a scene from Montmartre, each painting offers a piece of history and lasting emotion — a sure choice for any 20th-century French art enthusiast.
