Description from the seller
Armeno Mattioli (1920-2010)
The little calf
Oil on the table - 1946
Armeno Mattioli was born on June 2, 1920, in Vicchio di Mugello. From a young age, he showed a strong predilection for drawing and painting; this natural talent became more evident when he met the painter Ferruccio Rontini, who had been living in Mugello for many years. At the beginning of his artistic career, Mattioli was called up for military service during World War II and sent to fight in Greece. This event would decide his life and his future as a painter. He fought on the fronts of Monte Golico and Tepeleni. Fortuitously entering Athens, he resumed painting and rediscovered old Athens and its neighborhoods. In Greece, he met the woman who would become his life partner, his wife Ada.
And that he loves Greece is shown by his landscape paintings, so lovingly rendered and deeply felt. These are landscapes painted in the Greek islands: Santorini, Serifos, Skopelos; islands of the Aegean, capable of evoking a classical world now distant. Yet, these landscapes share many elements with certain local scenes, with some landscapes of Tuscany, where the dark green of the cypress pairs just as well with the silver of the olive trees, where the gentle, sinuous line of the hills often musically closes the horizon.
At the end of the conflict, he returned to Italy, in Vicchio, where, with interruptions for trips to Greece, he resided until 1953-54. He then established his residence in Athens. In his homeland, Mugello, they dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him in 1984 at the Casa di Giotto. He exhibited in the most important Italian and foreign cities. Many art critics have written about him. His works are part of public and private collections around the world. He died in Greece in 2010.
