Jogo do bicho (roughly translatable into Italian as 'animal game' or 'beast game') is a Brazilian gambling game similar to a lottery. Its name derives from the fact that the numbers on which bets can be placed (from 1 to 100) are divided into 25 groups, each represented by an animal (for example, the camel is associated with the numbers 29-30-31-32). The names of the animals are in alphabetical order. These groups contain (depending on the type of bet) four numbers each. Players can place bets on the drawing of an animal (thus on the four numbers associated with it) or on a specific number.
The game was invented according to tradition in 1892 by Baron João Batista Viana Drummond, the founder of the Rio de Janeiro zoological garden.
Although illegal in Brazil, gambling is widely practiced and is one of the activities of interest to organized crime.
