Description from the seller

A powerful late-career work by Japan’s legendary street photographer Daido Moriyama, K is a vivid exploration of urban chaos, solitude, and the fleeting moments of modern city life. First published in 2017, this photobook presents an entirely new body of work shot with a digital camera, yet unmistakably Moriyama in its rawness, grain, and instinctive framing.

From the streets of Tokyo to the shadows of anonymous alleys, K captures the fractured, restless spirit of contemporary urban Japan. As the publisher notes, the title “K” stands for “Keshiki” (風景 / landscape), and the book is a meditation on fragmented, dreamlike visions of city life.

Moriyama’s career began in postwar Osaka. After leaving technical school in the 1950s, he worked as a commercial designer’s assistant before entering the studio of renowned Kansai photographer Takeji Iwamiya in 1960. Later moving to Tokyo, he assisted Eikoh Hosoe, and soon emerged as a major figure in Japan’s photographic avant-garde. In the late 1960s, Moriyama joined the legendary Provoke collective alongside Takuma Nakahira, reshaping Japanese visual culture with gritty, expressive images.

The book concludes with a written essay by Moriyama himself, titled “The Origin and the Present: A Journey to Niépce / Three Points Today,” offering intimate reflections on his personal philosophy and artistic vision:

“They say dogs go to red-light districts, cats to alleyways, and insects avoid the nightlife quarters. To photograph such worldly places as they are, wandering endlessly through Tokyo — this might be the essence of both my life and my photography.”

An essential volume for collectors of Japanese photobooks and contemporary street photography.
