The Canon PowerShot G6, the successor to the G5 released in June 2003, is the first camera in a new generation of PowerShot G-series cameras. This series offers improved image quality, functionality, responsiveness, and a new design, based on suggestions from users of previous models.
The PowerShot G6 features a lens with a large aperture of f/2.0-3.0 and an optical zoom of up to 4x (equivalent to 35-140 mm in 35 mm format), along with a newly developed 1/1.8″ 7.1-megapixel CCD sensor. The lens, which received much praise from G5 users, has been optimized to make the most of the higher resolution of the image sensor, enabling the new camera to deliver the highest image quality in its class.
Among the recording features is the long-awaited 9-point AiAF with a large autofocus area. The function, which has been well received by users of Canon's IXY DIGITAL series, automatically selects one or more autofocus points for precise autofocus under various shooting conditions.
The model also offers a Super Macro function, enabling macro shots with autofocus from a distance of 5 cm. Additionally, faster AF performance and a shorter startup time ensure high responsiveness.
The PowerShot G6, with its first major redesign since the G3 in 2002, offers improved usability and a more stylish appearance. The camera's tilting LCD screen, which can be rotated 180 degrees horizontally and 270 degrees vertically for easy framing, has been enlarged from 4.6 cm to 5.1 cm, making it easier to see when framing or reviewing shots. Additionally, a complete reorganization of the housing and the use of advanced mounting technologies have resulted in a weight reduction of 30 grams and a size reduction of more than 10% compared to the G5.
