Description from the seller

Old box with straw marquetry – 19th century – with case

Description

Important rectangular box in straw marquetry, dating from the 19th century (circa 1840–1880), made on a wooden structure.
The lid is decorated with a central panel featuring a floral motif, depicting a flower basket, framed by an octagonal medallion and finely crafted geometric friezes.
The piece showcases meticulous craftsmanship, typical of the French and European straw marquetry tradition.

The box is accompanied by a small antique straw marquetry case, decorated with geometric motifs, displaying a stylistic coherence with the large box. This type of pairing is common for sewing sets or small necessities from the 19th century.

Technique
Natural and dyed straw marquetry.
Manual assembly on a wooden support.
Geometric and figurative decors
Ancient artisanal work (non-industrial)

Dimensions

Large box
Length: 23 cm
Width: 17 cm
Height: 8.5 cm

Small case
• Length: 6.5 cm
Width: 4 cm
Height: 2.5 cm

Era
19th century, middle / second half
Probable origin: France or Central Europe.

State
Satisfactory condition, with several small gaps of straw and the central panel stuck inside, so it will need restoration.
Visible wear at the angles and at the base.
Missing or altered lock
Healthy structure, without modern restoration but it will require it.

I insist on the importance of carefully examining the photos, as they serve as a description.

Remarks
Decorative technique now rare
Decorative and collectible piece
Ideal for curiosity cabinets, 19th-century decoration, folk art collection.
