Pearls form when an oyster self-protects itself by covering itself with shell material (nacre) when a foreign object enters its body.  This specimen visually demonstrates how nacre forms as the pearl grows. Nacre is made up of alternating layers of calcium carbonate crystals and proteins, giving the pearl its unique luster.
