Shark - Fossil tooth - O. Auriculatus - 8.5 cm (No reserve price)

→8.5 cm long x 7 cm wide Otodus Auriculatus teeth This is a very beautiful specimen for fossil collectors who appreciate the wonderful Otodus Auriculatus. Otodus Auriculatus is a very important but less talked about shark in the Otodus shark journey starting 103 Million years in Early Cretaceous with Cretalamna eventually peaking & unfortunately ending at the gigantic Otudus Megalodon 3.6 Million years ago. The whole journey spanned 100 million years. In the middle of this journey, Otodus Auriculatus appeared. It was a large shark measuring upto 9.5 meters in length and powerful teeth capable of taking down large prey and was perhaps top predator in Late Eocene to Early Oligocene epochs, roughly 38 to 48 million years ago. The Otodus Auriculatus would then transition to Otodus Sokolovi and so on. The teeth of Auriculatus has close resemblance to Sokolovi teeth and sometimes it may be hard to distinguish between the two. Basic difference being more curved root of the Auriculatus and much more uneven serrations both in body and the cusps are the hallmarks of Auriculatus teeth. The teeth can lean back on its root. The teeth has been professionally conserved and also necessary restored by crack re-enforcement. These teeth are find in hard /semi hard ground so retrieval is challenging and sometime serrations are lost . In this teeth, except for 2,3 serrations are lost at top right but overall serration profile in very good shape for an Auriculatus teeth fossil . The cusps are curved in different directions making it very unique in its own way. The teeth has roughly same width and length making it square profile teeth. For reference, photos of presented fossil are shown with Sokolovi teeth and with Megalodon teeth.
