Brassai
Misuzu Shobo /1987/japanese/275*325*20
Brassai's photo collection “Paris by Night.” Born in Hungary in 1899, Brassai lived and worked in Paris after emigrating there in the 1920s. He studied under the master André Kertész and became one of France's leading photographers, active since before the war alongside Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau. He also cultivated deep friendships with artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Giacometti, and was himself an artist possessing extraordinary talent in sculpture and drawing. Brassai's signature works include ‘Graffiti’, compiling street graffiti on walls and pavement, and ‘Paris du Nuit / Paris by Night’. This book is the Japanese edition of ‘Paris by Night’, published in 1987. From the underground world far removed from the glamorous image of Paris—prostitutes, vagrants, streets illuminated by lights in the darkness, rain-soaked cobblestones, town factories ablaze with flames—to the beauty of the cityscape itself, this volume masterfully captures the charm of Paris. Please enjoy the camera eye of Brassaï, hailed by novelist Henry Miller as “the eye of Paris.”
