Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as rounded to knobby masses without visible crystal structure. Their beauty is usually only revealed during polishing. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests as an intense rainbow shimmer. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, ranging from gray to black, which gave it its name.

Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-containing liquids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
