Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Like the pink variety thulite, it is used exclusively as a gemstone.

How Zoisit crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically develops transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glass-like luster on their surfaces. In contrast, cleavage planes tend to shimmer with an iridescent, mother-of-pearl-like appearance.
