Description from the seller

1930 fine-press limited edition of Eugène Delacroix’s Voyage au Maroc, published in Paris by Les Beaux-Arts, Édition d’Études et de Documents. Even though there are numerous books on Delacroix’s Moroccan travels, this 1930 publication is one of the most respected early 20th-century scholarly editions.

Limited to 310 numbered copies. This book is historically important for:

a. Orientalism and 19th-century French painting: The journey provided the basis for some of Delacroix’s major works, including Femmes d’Alger, Fantasia arabe, and many Orientalist sketches.

b. Art-historical documentation: This edition reproduces his sketches and watercolors using phototype, a high-quality early photomechanical process distinct from lithography. Colorplates are handcolored.

c. Joubin’s involvement: André Joubin was the most authoritative editor of Delacroix’s writings in the early 20th century, giving this edition scholarly weight.

Hardcover library rebound. Very clean copy with minimal pencil marking on text. Ex-libris sticker and bookplate. Heavy cream stock paper, Phototype plates with hand coloring, letterpress typography, Large quarto format.
