Unknown - Ethiopian prayer and protection scroll - 1800

Authentic Ethiopian prayer and protection scroll (Ketab) dating to the 19th century, handwritten in classical Geʽez script on parchment (animal skin). The scroll is richly decorated with figural representations of saints and angels, geometric protective symbols, and cross and mandala motifs, characteristic of the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. Black and red inks are used to structure the liturgical and apotropaic texts. The parchment scroll is composed of several joined parchment sections, a traditional and original construction method commonly found in Ethiopian scroll manuscripts of this period. Of particular interest is the original leather carrying case with strap, used to wear the scroll on the body for protection. Complete sets with their original case are significantly rarer than scrolls alone. Condition: Condition consistent with age and use. Natural patina, folds, and wear to the parchment; age-related wear to the leather case. No modern restoration; entirely original and authentic. Origin: Ethiopia Date: 19th century Material: Parchment (animal skin), leather Script: Geʽez
