Pair of wall mirrors in solid wood, carved and hand-gilded with antique gold leaf, in Italian Rococo style, dating to the first half of the 20th century, likely originating from Tuscany, Italy.
Description from the seller
Description
Important pair of wall mirrors with candle holder arms, made of finely carved solid wood and gilded with leaf gold according to traditional 18th-century techniques. The quality of the carving, the pronounced depth of the scroll volutes, and the richness of the floral motifs place the pair within the mature Italian Rococo style, with a dating consistent around the mid-20th century.
The stylistic and constructive features, combined with the balance of composition and decorative refinement, suggest a high-level Italian production, likely attributable to the Tuscany area, historically renowned in the 18th century for workshops specialized in carved woodwork and gilding for representative furnishings.
The frames are entirely hand-carved, as demonstrated by the natural irregularities of the craftsmanship, the vitality of the details, and the traces of tools still visible. The antique leaf gilding, applied on traditional preparation, retains an authentic and uniform patina, with wear consistent with age and free from invasive modern interventions.
The glasses are original from the period, shaped and polished, with a slightly wavy reflection. They show pinpoint oxidation and light veiling of the silvering, consistent with the early techniques of manufacturing reflective glass. In direct light, an evident optical effect of depth can be observed along the inner perimeter of the mirror, due to the stratification of the silvering and the manual craftsmanship of the glass. These characteristics are fully consistent with antique glasses made using traditional methods, likely including mercury technique.
The candle holders, carved and gilded, are harmoniously integrated into the structure and appear contemporaneous with the mirror, or at least attributable to an 18th-century intervention, a practice documented to enhance the decorative and luminous function of wall mirrors.
Overall, these are a pair of mirror cabinets of remarkable quality, rare for their uniformity, condition, and decorative strength, particularly suitable for collectors, historic residences, or high-level classic environments.
