Description from the seller
Ceramic Fish Service – Sarreguemines, France
Iconic zoomorphic design – 1940s/50s airbrush decoration – Collectible and theatrical
Up for auction is an original ceramic fish service produced by the historic Sarreguemines manufactory, one of the most renowned French factories of the 19th and 20th centuries, famous for its artistic majolica and highly decorative services.
The service immediately stands out for its unmistakable zoomorphic shape: each plate reproduces the silhouette of a stylized fish, with raised edges and a finely outlined head. The large serving plate, designed as a whole fish, dominates the composition with a truly remarkable stage presence.
The decoration, created with the typical airbrush technique of the 1940s and 1950s, fades from pinkish to gray with soft transitions and light marine atmospheres, almost painterly. The modeled scales and the fish's head, rendered with a deliberately minimal stroke, give the service a retro charm that's hard to ignore: it's the kind of piece that immediately becomes a focal point, both on the table and in a cabinet.
Composition of the service
Flat dishes 23.5 cm diameter
1 oval serving dish 54x26
The Sarreguemines pottery, active since the 18th century, is one of the most important names in French ceramics. Its productions range from artistic maiolica to the most fanciful tableware, often characterized by unconventional shapes and vibrant decorations. The fish services – today highly sought after by European vintage collectors – represent one of the most original chapters of its post-war production.
Storage conditions
The service is in good overall condition. As a normal consequence of age, there are some slightly discolored plates and small chips on the back of some items, which are not visible on the cord and therefore do not affect the aesthetic appearance at the table.
Overall, the service maintains all its vintage charm and is perfectly usable and decorative.
Shipping
The packaging will be carried out with professional care, using appropriate protective materials. The shipment will be made via a tracked courier, ensuring maximum safety during transport.
