BarBeni (1981) - Bilqis (Queen of Sheba)

Description Bilqis (Queen of Sheba) is one of the most enduring and influential female figures in world history, literature, and mythology—a character situated at the intersection of history, sacred texts, and cultural narratives. She is referenced in the Qur’an (Surah An-Naml), the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), and later Islamic, Middle Eastern, and African literary traditions. Across these sources, Bilqis emerges not merely as a ruler, but as a powerful symbol of wisdom, conscious leadership, female sovereignty, and diplomacy. According to historical and literary accounts, Bilqis ruled the prosperous kingdom of Sheba, a land renowned for its wealth, advanced civilization, and extensive trade networks. Unlike many ancient portrayals of power rooted in conquest and warfare, Bilqis represents a model of intellect-driven governance. She is described as a leader who values consultation, foresight, and strategic reasoning, carefully weighing the human and political consequences of conflict before acting. This approach distinguishes her as one of the rare female sovereigns in ancient world literature whose authority is founded on wisdom rather than force. In visual art and cultural representations, Bilqis is traditionally depicted with golden jewelry, luxurious garments, and a composed yet commanding presence. Gold and precious adornments function not only as signs of material wealth, but also as symbols of legitimacy, knowledge, and continuity with ancient traditions. Her calm expression and introspective gaze convey a ruler whose power is grounded in awareness, dignity, and deliberate choice. This artwork presents an artistic interpretation of Bilqis, reimagining her as a timeless figure that transcends historical boundaries. Rather than portraying her solely as a historical queen, the artist emphasizes her role as a universal archetype of enlightened leadership, feminine strength, and cultural refinement. Through this visual narrative, Bilqis is presented as a figure whose legacy continues to inspire contemporary thought, art, and discourse—an enduring symbol of wisdom, grace, and sovereign authority. …… About BarBeni: Behzad Mojarad Bigdeli, known by his stage name “BarBeni,” was born in 1981 in Tehran, Iran.
