Coptic, Ancient Egyptian Wood Weaver´s Comb
Coptic, Ancient Egyptian. Weaver´s Comb. 5th-7th Century AD.
The Copts are a Christian ethnoreligious group native to North Africa, who have primarily inhabited the area of modern Egypt and Sudan since antiquity. Coptic culture can be seen as an evolution of ancient Egypt, but with a notable Christian influence. The Copts are the direct descendants of the ancient Egyptians, although their religion has shifted from ancient Egyptian polytheism to Christianity. Coptic Christianity is one of the oldest branches of Christianity and maintains a distinct cultural and linguistic identity, which is reflected in their art, architecture, and traditions.
Weaving combs are used to compact each row of weaving into place, creating a strong and stable fabric. This piece is carved from a single piece of wood. It is rectangular in shape, with short teeth and diagonal grooves at one corner. 5th-7th centuries AD. Dimensions: Length 10.5 cm.
