100 Years Old - Siam - Box - .925 silver, Niello - Gilt

Superior hand crafted quality early 20th Century sterling 925 silver and niello large size rectangular box, with gilt interior and polished redwood lining, standing on four feet. The hinged cover finely ornate with an original scenic depiction of Wat Arun Temple in Bangkok and - on all sides - with stylised leaves and Thai deities on polished ground. This particular box is an exceptional example of Thai niello work, such pieces were only made for the Royal House. The tradition of presenting nielloware objects as State gifts goes back to the reign of King Narai of Ayutthaya (1656-1688) and continued through the 20th century. Apparently unmarked (as most Royal State gifts are) and positively acid tested for high grade silver.
